Dreamhost
I have read on several blogs that Dreamhost is a great place to host if you want easy, one-click installations of Wordpress. My test of the Dreamhost could not be farther from that. I found out many things that annoyed me about the hosting company.
The most peculiar thing about Dreamhost is that they have a PMB box instead of a regular address located on their contact information. I do appreciate the fact they have a abuse@dreamhost email located for complaints about spammers and content stealers.
There is no mention of a phone number to call unless you pay a monthly fee to talk to a human over the phone. They do have a fax number listed but what good is that? So you basically are locked into hosting with no human contact but the emails you can send.
It normally takes 3 hours or more for an email response. And if you want to contact them after regular business hours you can forget that unless you have time to get the email the next day.
My install of Wordpress was a nightmare. For one the navigation on the Dreamhost console is so hard to understand and frustrating. I made a MySql database and tried for the one-click Wordpress to find my email box flooded with “There was an error while installing wordpress on your site!”.
I could not even find a 404 error page editor on this host. Where on earth do you send the 404 redirects?
Some good things I found about Dreamhost is that you do get a choice inside preferences at https://panel.dreamhost.com to choose to use a non-secure HTTP for images and javascript on the panel making it faster. All webhosting companies should offer this feature. I also like another security feature requiring email confirmation before allowing a new IP to log in to your web panel making it more secure. You can toggle this on and off if you wish but it’s a wonderful security feature I have never seen before in shared hosting.
Problems and issues with Installing Wordpress on Dreamhost or other one-click hosts:
Here is a chat on the topic.
WebmasterHelper:i logged into the phpadmin, went to import and just loaded the zip file in there and clicked go
when I uploaded the wordpress files, it was already installed from the database, i didn't have to run install at all
Webmaster2: yeah something was installed giving me errors.. so you uploaded the wordpress files through FTP then went to an install link to install?
WebmasterHelper: i did the database first, and then uploaded wordpress files, and it was already installed as it was in the database
WebmasterHelper: but usually i just upload the files and go to domain.com/wp-admin/install.php to install it
WebmasterHelper: i always make headers and backgrounds so it makes it easier to go in and change things when i manually install it
Webmaster2: yeah but the wordpress they have is 2.5 it says WordPress 2.3.2
Webmaster2: i guess you downloaded the older version?
WebmasterHelper: I have a version on my computer; i guess it’s an old one
Webmaster2: 2.5 is amazing if you haven’t used it
WebmasterHelper: I keep a copy on my desktop, to just change stuff around and upload it fast.... i should probably download it to use
Webmaster2: so you just copy the new wordpress into the main directory and then upload the zip files?
Webmaster2: well I guess you just use the same database
WebmasterHelper: you delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes file
WebmasterHelper: upload the new folders by that name, as well as all of the regular php files
WebmasterHelper: then you go to domain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php
WebmasterHelper: and click upgrade
Webmaster2: oh i didn’t realize they had an upgrade link.. well i need to quit doing this one-click install mess it only messes things up
WebmasterHelper: well the upgrade link isn't there until you upload 2.5 files
Webmaster2: it seems to be working good.. only prob i see is the log in area where the wordpress logo is missing but i think thats just a glitch
WebmasterHelper: it was missing on my upgrade also it was like half a logo
Webmaster2: maybe that an image was copied over somewhere
WebmasterHelper: it could be that it was messed up in the uploading... but i guess that wouldn't be right, because its the same on both of ours
Webmaster2: look under discussion in you wordpress and it says "maximum rating"
Webmaster2: LOL G — Suitable for all audiences
Webmaster2: is checked by default but i wonder if that means people cant comment obscene stuff
Webmaster2: cause there is a X — Even more mature than above
WebmasterHelper: whats it under?
Webmaster2: Discussion
Webmaster2: Settings then Discussion
WebmasterHelper: found it
WebmasterHelper: weird, the old version doesn't have that
Webmaster2: i wonder if it moderated the comments from before
Webmaster2: these blog spammers are getting smarter .. they are trying to get approved by adding good links to their spam links
