Choosing the Right Internet Service for Canadians

(CA.ARA) - Back to School is a time when many people buy or receive new home computers, upgrade older systems and get their home technology in order. Getting on the Internet is easy. With many connection options to consider, it is important to choose an Internet service that best suits the user needs.

“Before selecting an Internet service, you should make a list of your needs and requirements,” says Sandy Ross, director and general manager of Member Services for AOL Canada Inc. “Some people use the Internet to check e-mail and search while others download images and software. By assessing your online activities, you can select the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and service level that is right for you.”

Some of the options available are:

* Dial-up -- This traditional connection provides online users access to the Internet at a low cost. For basic search and e-mail, dial-up offers good value. Providers usually charge a rate per month based on minutes used or offer unlimited access plans.

* Full High Speed -- Offered via Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable, this type of Internet connection provides always-on, high speed service. High speed services are ideal for users who download often from the Internet, or for those in need of accessing streaming video.

* High Speed “Lite” -- Many Canadian ISPs offer “lite” services to users who want a faster Internet experience for Web browsing and e-mailing, but do not necessarily need download or streaming video speed. “Lite” services are available over DSL and cable connections or through accelerated dial-up services such as Netscape Online that provides a high speed option to anyone with a phone connection. All these options offer speeds up to 5 times faster than traditional dial-up.

Other important features to think about include online safety and security. For example, AOL Canada offers Parental Controls with their basic service for no extra charge. Virus scanners, spam filters and firewall protection should also be part of the package.

By evaluating how they are using the Internet, Canadians can select the right service at a price point that fits their needs.

* Questions to Answer before Choosing an Internet Service

2. How important is it to keep my phone line free while I am on the Internet?

3. What kind of activities do I want to do online? Do I want to download images and software or just e-mail friends?

4. How much time do I usually spend online per visit? How often do I expect to go online each week?

5. How many e-mail addresses are provided per account and is home networking included?

6. Do I need to be able to access my email from other locations?
